Title and Reporting Relationship

Position Title: NZBCA Development Tour Team Manager (Volunteer)
Reports To: NZBCA Executive
Position Location: Not specific but preferably New Zealand
Term of Position: January 1 2018 to November 1 2018 (may be extended dependant on tour dates)

Purpose of Position

The Team Manager role is an important and significant position within this Development Tour side to tour Australian States in October 2018 (dates to be confirmed). The Team Manager is responsible for off-field tasks during the tour, a catalyst, causing things to happen for other people and stimulating the development of the team through nurturing a climate of trust, respect and shared ownership., To achieve this, the team manager  role will be very diverse, taking on a number of different aspects of responsibility.

This role requires someone who is flexible, adaptable and able to switch between a number of different tasks as circumstances change. The role may seem weighted in requirements at first but it is likely that applicants for the role will have prior experience in team management and therefore not struggle too much with the dimensions of the role.

Not only is the manager’s role critical, the person filling the role also needs to be adaptable as it is likely the dimensions of the role will change while on tour to keep meeting the needs of the team and each of the players. Managing the dynamics of players with different stages of vision loss is very different to managing elite athletes and can therefore be a steep learning curve – although some of the players will have travelled before and have experienced the atmosphere and demands of Blind Cricket, there will be a number of different perceptions held.

  • Assist the Team Coach in the day-to-day planning, programming and support of the team and individual player activities.
  • Lead by example and instil the highest standards of behaviour, ethics and discipline through the Development tour.
  • Give clear direction to the team, communicate effectively the NZBCA’s expectations with regards to performance, productivity, accountability, behaviour and discipline – using the NZBCA’s “Core Document 5 – Code of Behaviour” and “Core Document 6 – Code of Conduct” for reference.

Essential Criteria

  • Access to internet and email
  • Strong written (especially email) and oral communication skills
  • Be a member of the NZBCA
  • Previous experience as a team manager
  • Be unbiased with sound judgement
  • Work well in a team and is able to enforce expectations of players whilst on tour
  • Planning, organisation and execution skills
  • Leadership and people management skills
  • Experience in travelling with a sports team

Desirable Skills

  • Experience in working with people who are blind or have vision loss
  • Knowledge of training techniques for skills, tactical and physical development
